Meeting – September 2025

Meeting – September 2025

Guest Speaker: Julian Varricchio

At the end of 2024 Julian Varrichio had presented the Society with a copy of his book Mornington Peninsula, Past, Present, Future which has pride of place in our Museum. This marvellous book was a collaboration between Julian and his business partner and long-time friend, Jack Ruben. Following on from this, Julian agreed to come along to one of our meetings as guest speaker.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Jack was unable to be present at our meeting, but Julian did a great job. He explained the very complicated process of putting the book together, some of the trials and tribulations encountered along the way and the very interesting way they achieved their final goal of having this amazing labour of love published.

Prue presenting Julian with a thank-you gift after his presentation.

Compiled by Julian Varricchio as photographer and editor, and written by Jack Ruben, this book brings to life the Peninsula’s stories with a unique perspective. They have done an excellent job of collecting historical photos and pairing them with present day images. Julian mentioned that both he and Jack share a deep connection to the area, making this more than just an historical account – it’s a heartfelt homage to the place they call home.

Julian advised the gathering that since completing the Mornington Peninsula book, they have collaborated further and have now published a similar book about Bendigo and also Melbourne (two volumes required for Melbourne)! All of these amazing compilations will resonate well with those people living in the areas in question and will also serve as a great historic record for the future. Well done Julian and Jack and thank-you Julian for speaking with us and doing a great job of answering questions from the audience.
