Meeting – March 2024

Instead of our usual monthly meeting, on March 25th we visited the Cargo Shed in Flinders. The Flinders Historical Society kindly opened the Cargo Shed especially for our members.

Neville Wale, President, welcomed our members and introduced us to many aspects of the history of the Cargo Shed and its exhibits and provided us with information on the Pier Precinct generally. Built in the 1870s the shed has been renovated and is now home to an interpretive display tracing the history of the area back to the days before European settlement. The shed had become derelict by the early 2000s. Fortunately, it was restored by the Shire with the aid of a grant from the Heritage Council of Victoria in 2011. The result of the restoration is certainly very impressive.

I believe the drive over to Flinders was worthwhile and members who attended seemed to enjoy learning about the Cargo Shed and its history. After our visit to the Cargo Shed, members headed to the Flinders Hotel for coffee plus some delicious muffins courtesy of John Hazledine. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
