Our monthly meeting was held on a very wintery June day, but despite the conditions, the meeting was well attended. I suspect this was because people were very interested to hear from our very own John Hazledine speaking about his adventures on the Canning Stock Route.
The Canning Stock Route is a track that is usually followed from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australian to Wiluna in the mid-west region. With a total distance of around 1850km it is claimed to be the longest historic stock route in the world. John and his fellow adventurers chose to travel the track the opposite way around – starting from the vicinity of Wiluna through to Halls Creek. It is considered to be one of the world’s most challenging and remote four-wheel-drive adventures.
John’s talk was highly informative and provided us with extremely interesting information about the history of the route.
John also presented some terrific photos which showed the Canning Stock Route in all its glory – the deep sandy tracks, the mulga, the deep red rock formations.
One of the most interesting was the Wolfe Creek meteorite site. The information John provided was fascinating.
The crater averages about 875 metres (2,871 ft) n diameter, 60 metres (200 ft) from rim to present crater floor. It is estimated that the meteorite that formed it was about 15 minutes (49 ft) in diameter and had a mass of about 14,000 tonnes. Wolfe Creek Crater is the second-largest crater in the world.

Secretary Prue thanked John for a very entertaining and informative talk. It was much enjoyed by everyone present.
