The church hall again seemed to work well for our General Meeting in June. We do thank committee member David Johnson for bringing along his speaker system.
Ross spoke about his newly published biography, Harold Holt: Always One Step Further. Harold Holt’s association with the Mornington Peninsula, and particularly Cheviot Beach, is well known and it was interesting that one member of the audience, Bernie Woiwod, was one of the police who first arrived at Cheviot Beach on the day of Holt’s disappearance. Bernie and Ross took the opportunity for a chat after Ross’s talk.
Ross’s talk was about how he became interested in Harold Holt, the people he talked to in the course of his research, and how the sea itself ‘is a character in the story’. Ross read two poems for us, ‘The Swimmer’ by Bruce Daw and ‘Skin Diver’ by Thomas Shapcott.
Ross was given a copy of Rye – A Book of Memories and thanked for driving so far to speak to us.
